Reading at Herne Bay School and Seashells Nursery

We love reading at our school. Our teachers read a range of exciting stories with their classes at least three times a day. Across the school we have inviting book corner area welcoming children to sit, relax and enjoy a good book!
Our school teaches children how to read using the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. Children are assessed every six weeks and are put into smaller groups to promote rapid progress. We teach a new sound each day and read a book over three days. Read Write Inc. lessons also include handwriting, spelling, sentence writing, common word recognition, learning how to read with pace and how to answer questions about the book.
In addition to daily Read Write Inc. lessons, every class has a designated time each day where the children can read for pleasure. They can do this with a friend, on their own, with a school book or a book brought in from home.
Year 2 children progress from Read Write Inc. to in class Rich Reading lessons once assessed to be a fluent and competent reader.
Children who need additional support are also offered daily phonics and word recognition intervention.
Each child will receive a Read Write Inc book bag book (or colour banded book for some Year 2 children) each week. You can record all of their lovely reading at home in our reading records for your child to share with their teacher.
Children also take a book of their own choice from the class library to share at home each week.
Thank you, Bonnie Amos Read Write Inc. / reading leader
